What Kevin's Using
Here you'll find some short notes on what Kevin is using on the Elite Series Trail. No fluff, no filler, no BS; if it works, he tells. If he tries something and it's crap, he tells. Some of the items are sponsor items and some of them are not. Check it out to see what's up.

Vicious Fluorocarbon
Vicious has the first fluorocarbon line that I have been able to confidently use 6 pound test line. I've tried every fluoro I could get my hands on and have never felt confident using anything less than 8 pound. With many of the lines, I didn't feel like I could go less than 10 pound without breaking off fish. During the Northern Swing this past summer, I used Vicious fluoro exclusively. Fished a dropshot on Erie with it and drug a tube on Lake Michigan with it. During that time, I broke off one fish that was totally my fault because I didn't retie after catching a 4 pound smallie. That is probably one of the keys to using any small diameter fluoro - when you stress it by catching a quality fish or getting hung, you need to take the time to re-tie. B.T.S. (Bow To Stern)
I have no idea what this stuff is, but it freakin' works. We've used it on the front of the camper, you know, where all the bugs in the world go "SPLAT". A few coats of BTS and the fron of the camper, and the entire camper, is much easier to clean. It's so easy to clean now that the bugs almost slide off with just pressure from the hose. No joke. BTS is some amazing stuff. Oh yeah, it works pretty good on you boat, too. Find out more about BTS by clicking here.

Stormy Kromer
I picked up my first Stormy Kromer last fall when we were in Wisconsin chasing some muskies around. I put it on then and haven't taken it off too many days since. What's that? You've never heard of a Stormy Kromer? It's six panels of wool with earflaps that's made in the USA and ready to take on the worst that Old Man Winter can dish out. Built in Michigan's Upper Peninsula by people who know a thing or two about cold weather, a Stormy Kromer is your best friend when the mercury dips. A Stormy Kromer is more than a hat, it's survival gear. See for yourself by clicking here.

Icebreaker
Back to wool long undies for me. After years of wearing synthetics - polypropylene, polyester, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyolefin, and all the other poly-want-some-stinky-undies - I've gone back to wool and love it. Icebreakers use Merino wool, which is non-itch, non-stink, and doesn't come from a barrel in the Middle East. Icebreakers are soft, breathable, warm even when wet, and dry quickly. The 200 or 260 weights are perfect layers under any fleece for the coldest of conditions. Check out more about Icebreakers here.

Outdoor Research Gripper Gloves
These fleece WindStopper gloves are some of the few pairs that I've found that I'm able to fish in all day during cold weather that will (A) keep my hands warm, and (B) not make my hands cramp trying to fight the gloves all day. Synthetic palms and fingers make handling a rod a breeze. I keep an extra pair in the boat on extremely cold days and change them out if they get wet. They will dry quickly with body heat just by stuffing them inside your coat. Find out more about Gripper Gloves here.

Mountain Hardwear Hooded Compressor Jacket and Pants
I planned to do quite a lot of fishing this winter and I didn't want to get cold. Fleece is a good insulator, down to a certain temperature, but it's hard to layer fleece on top of fleece without it binding together. I took a trip to Ozark Outdoor Supply and came up with theperfect solution: the Compressor Jacket and Pants. Extremely light, slides easily over other layers, and fabulously warm, I've spent several days out on the water in sub-freezing temps and been toasty warm all day. Worth their weight in tungsten weights. See more about the Compressor Jacket and Pants here.
